Celebrating 32 Years of Service: Karen Edwards Retires from Adferiad

“The small steps you achieve, to help someone with serious mental illness, make the world of difference in fighting against loneliness and isolation.”

This month, Adferiad says goodbye to a dedicated colleague whose 32 years of service have made a lasting impact on individuals, families, and communities across North Wales.

Karen Edwards first joined the organisation in 1994, when it was known as the National Schizophrenic Fellowship. Beginning her career as a District Nurse in Wrexham, she quickly recognised that many people were living with serious mental health challenges and co-occurring needs, often experiencing loneliness and isolation without adequate support.

Karen initially worked within carer support, before progressing to become North East Wales County Manager, supporting Adferiad’s carer network. Her passion and commitment to supporting others did not go unnoticed.

Reflecting on a key moment in her career, Karen said:
“Alun phoned me one day to ask if I would help oversee the housing support in the areas for people with serious mental illness and co-occurring needs.

“At first I was concerned, I wasn’t sure - but he assured me I would have help, and Rhiannon Luke taught me everything I needed to know.”

Karen went on to manage the Wrexham Outreach Tenancy Support (WOTS) service, supporting individuals with mental health and/or substance use needs to live independently within the community.

“Adferiad challenges you to grow, and throughout the years, I have grown with my colleagues,” she said.

Looking back on her career, Karen highlights the lasting relationships she has built as one of her proudest achievements.

“When I first took on the Wrexham Carer Group, five members of that original group still access the service 32 years on.

“I’m going to say goodbye to that group this Thursday - it is going to be an emotional day.

“I’ve passed the baton on to a very good colleague and know they will be in safe hands.”

She added:
“I have enjoyed watching people grow throughout the history of Adferiad. The sense of achievement our staff get when the people they support succeed - it’s lovely.”

“Once someone is discharged from our support, we’ve always operated an open-door policy where we will support people if they are in trouble and we’ve had a few instances where that has happened. I am proud that we are there to support when needed” Karen Added.

Karen will leave Adferiad on 28 May, taking with her a legacy of compassion, dedication, and commitment to supporting others.
